NCC Recognized for 30 Years with Adopt-a-Highway Program

Nash Community College received recognition from the State of North Carolina Department of Transportation for its 30-year commitment to the Adopt-a-Highway program. Since 1989, NCC students, faculty and staff have demonstrated their commitment to keeping the roadside clean by participating in the program.

College representatives pick-up litter along Old Carriage Road in front of campus and on Eastern Avenue in Nashville. In recognition of NCC’s service to protect the environment and enhance the quality of life for all North Carolinians, the campus received a distinguished star award and a star will be added to both of NCC’s Adopt-a-Highway road signs.

Pictured from left: NCC President, Dr. Lew Hunnicutt; Associate Dean of Student Engagement, Kara Deans; Biology Instructor, Christine Ricci; Library Support Specialist and SGA Co-Advisor, Michael Stallings; and Instructor and Master Gardener, Ken White.

Nearly 5,000 groups have adopted approximately 10,000 miles of state-maintained roads through the Adopt-a-Highway program. Last year, more than 50,000 volunteers from all 100 North Carolina counties removed more than one million pounds of litter from roadsides. These volunteers save taxpayers millions of dollars annually in roadside cleanup costs.

Dr. Lori Byrd, Associate Director, Academic Program-Health Sciences for the North Carolina Community College System, will be the guest speaker for Nash Community College’s 2020 Nurses Pinning Ceremony. In her role, Dr. Byrd provides support and advocacy for Allied Health and Nursing Programs for North Carolina’s 58 community colleges.

The Nash Community College Associate Degree Nursing graduate pinning ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2020, at 7:30 PM in the NCC Brown Auditorium. Dr. Byrd began her career as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She became a registered nurse at Wake Medical Center and later worked at Wilson Medical Center. She served as faculty at Campbell University, Barton College and Walden University. Prior to working at the System Office, Dr. Byrd was a Nursing Administrative Coordinator and House Supervisor for UNC Johnston Health.

Dr. Byrd graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing from Johnston Community College. Gus Griffith

Adam “Gus” Griffith of Nashville is Nash Community College’s 2020 Academic Excellence Award recipient.

Gus Griffith is an Associate in Engineering degree student who plans to transfer to North Carolina State University and major in Chemical Engineering with a concentration in nanoscience.

“I started my academic career at NCC with great hesitancy,” he said. “There had been many years since I was a student. I had forgotten so much. I had so many doubts.”

Gus Griffith is a father and a veteran of the United States Navy. He graduated from NCC with a High School Equivalency diploma, an Associate in Science degree and a Phlebotomy certificate. Griffith has maintained a 4.0 grade point average in the Engineering program and plans to graduate in May 2020.

“During my time at NCC, many instructors have believed in me,” Griffith said. “They knew I would succeed. They knew I was going to be an engineer. They would not let me quit even when I felt like I could not continue. They never let me forget that I am worthy of the title of engineer.”

Griffith serves his fellow students as a tutor, assists in the physics laboratory, and organizes study groups benefitting a large number of students. He is an active member of Gamma Beta Phi service and honor society and is a team leader for the award-winning Nash Community College High Altitude Balloon Team, the Nashtronauts. Griffith also volunteers his time assisting with the campus apiary.

“With his warmth, intelligence, and wit, he includes everyone. He keeps us all laughing, learning, and truly feeling like close friends,” one instructor said.

As the recipient of NCC’s highest academic honor, Griffith will represent the College among North Carolina’s 58-community college system.

“So many NCC instructors have encouraged me and believed in me when I found it difficult to believe in myself. I am a success today because of great teachers like them. I am very grateful and eternally in their debt.”

Jessica Trueblood, Nash Community College alumna, spoke with current NCC students on Thursday, March 12, 2020 about her experience as a transfer student. Jessica graduated from NCC’s Associate in Science and Associate in Engineering programs in 2018 and 2019, respectively. She is a sophomore in the Biomedical Engineering program at North Carolina State University.

Last summer, Jessica was selected for the Phenotypic Plasticity Research Experience for Community College Students (PRECS). A collaboration between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Parkland College, the program is an opportunity for 10 community college students to conduct research for 10 weeks during the summer.

Grant Funds ESL Virtual Reality Project

Nash Community College’s English as a Second Language students are learning through virtual reality instruction thanks to a grant funded by Wake Electric Membership Corporation and WE Care.

Using virtual reality headsets, students employ cutting-edge technology in a uniquely concentrated and tangible manner through virtual learning, benefiting various learning styles and increasing academic gains. This aids in the learning process as students work to acquire the skills needed for citizenship, high-quality employment and careers.

“Experienced ESL educators are always interested in acquiring new ways to broaden students’ writing abilities as their fluency increases as part of increasing their preparation for the workplace,” NCC ESL Instructor Michele Cruz said. “For ESL students, writing can be the most challenging skill in which to gain proficiency. Through these learning experiences, students have new insight into places and ideas that were previously only abstract concepts. These experiences serve to heighten written content and develop critical thinking regarding various topics for essays.”

Research shows that virtual reality-based education can support both theoretical and practical skills training.

The NCC students also use virtual reality technology for enhanced learning regarding American culture, US history and civics, career skills, social studies and science. ESL students benefit greatly from the addition of VR learning opportunities in all these areas, which coincide with the integrated education and training goals set out by the Workforce Innovations and Opportunities Act.

“In addition to personalized learning, groups may also experience the same virtual reality setting together at the same time, which allows for interaction, collaboration, and team building. This dynamic tool will have a lasting positive impact on students and will help them to achieve the educational gains they need to advance in their learning and life goals,” explained Cruz.

The grant supported the license subscription, instructor headset training, preparations and development of workforce training and soft skill activities. The software includes access to a class portal with over 500 lessons and activities, the option to create a playlist of lessons, and to create/manage class content.
